Czech Republic: Waiting for the View (Week 3)

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

Stayed in Prague this week. Celebrated Jess’s birthday, ate burritos at 4 A.M., shopped at Palladium Mall, cooked with friends, ate all-you-can-eat sushi, recovered from a sore throat, and finished off the weekend with a beautiful mountain hike at Česke Švýcarsko (Bohemian Switzerland National Park) and Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains.

September 4th-5th, 2017 – Back to School

Good to be back in class for the week, but unfortunately 99% of my friends were sick from traveling. Made tea with lemon and honey for six to seven different people.

Not much else interesting happened so I’m going to talk about food some more: 1) bread rolls here are so aromatic and fresh and they’re literally only 20 cents; 2) chocolate and pudding pastries are good and also dangerously cheap; 3) found almond soy and coconut soy yogurt at Albert Supermarket and I am ready to fall in love with more than just Greek yogurt.

September 6th, 2017 – A (Burrito) Loco Night

Early birthday celebration for Jess. Bought her a confetti cake at Bakeshop to surprise her after Korean food at Mamy Food (honestly pretty sub-par budae-jigae, but at least I can have budae-jigae in Prague)!

Retro again afterwards.

4:00 A.M. Burrito Loco run.

Past NYU Praguers would be proud.

September 7th, 2017 – Me Day

A lazy day that started at 11 A.M. and finished with window-shopping and a baked salmon salad at Palladium Mall.

September 8th, 2017 – Sushi and New Fish in the Sea

All-you-can-eat sushi conveyor belt to officially celebrate Jess’s birthday! Yes I had three food babies.

Met up with Alex, a nice German guy whom I met at Retro last Wednesday night, outside New Yorker in Old Town Square. A very impromptu decision that ended with tea, an interesting conversation on the second floor deck of a bar/restaurant/club called Duplex (we talked about work and school, our Instagrams, blogs, life in Prague, and more), and a stroll and photoshoot through Old Town.

I learned that he respects people “who curate and create, not just consume,” works in marketing at FreedomAcademy, moved to Prague in February, enjoys vlogging, runs his own start-up, meditates every morning, helps his clients with 30-day motivational challenges, and gave up sugar in his diet. What an interesting and proactive person.

We played around with Alex’s camera on the rooftop. Our waiter at Duplex was incredibly sweet and, when he saw us taking photos of each other and the scenery, volunteered to take a photo of the two of us.

Starting to get sick because of all the coughers around me (*cough EVERYONE cough*). But will drink gallons of tea and sleep more to push it back!

September 9th, 2017 – Exploring Prague

Woke up and could barely talk my throat was so hoarse, but at least the feverish feeling had subsided. My entire suite–all in various stages of sickness–took an easy day off as we lounged around with zombie faces and indoor scarves. Later went grocery shopping with Ashley, Jessica, and John to get outside. Went to a local post office to buy stamps for postcards, but remembered most Česká poštas are closed on the weekends. Had an impromptu photoshoot of John and the nearby town before stopping by Tesco and taking the tram back home.

September 10th, 2017 – An Uphill Climb

Czech Switzerland (Česke Švýcarsko) National Park and Krkonoše Mountains: everything I wanted out of a day-long mountain hike. Cliffs and canoe rides. Plains and petrichor. Beautiful pastels and picturesque skies, ridged rock formations and moss groves, burbling waterfalls and creeks. Restaurants, hotels, farms, and houses along the way. Silence and solitude when asked for. Orange-pink sunsets overlooking lush green mountain tops and hills dotted with red-roofed chalets.
